Self-awareness: The foundation for growth and well-being

Who am I?

How do I feel?

Why am I doing the things I do?

What do I want out of life?

Did it feel strange to answer those questions? You're not alone! In a world where everyone is constantly scrolling and seeking quick thrills, taking time to be still and reflect seems like a radical act of self-care.

Shifting attention from external influences to your internal beliefs, motivations, defenses, and thought patterns can significantly enhance overall happiness and well-being. Furthermore, a study indicates that cultivating greater self-awareness can lead to increased confidence, improved social interactions, better decision-making abilities, heightened creativity, and a more proactive approach to work-related challenges.

Self-awareness means understanding yourself - your thoughts, feelings, values, beliefs, and actions - and how they are all connected.

It is one of the very first components of the self-concept to emerge, given that we are not born completely self-aware. Self-awareness is the individual's innate capacity to become the object of their attention, comprehend their thoughts and emotions, and recognize their actions and their consequences.

When you focus on yourself from a psychological perspective, two dimensions of self-awareness come into play, as described by Duval and Wicklund in 1972:

Internal self-awareness: understanding our values, emotions, and strengths, and acknowledging our impact on others. Is fundamentally important for personal growth.

External self-awareness: Individuals who possess insight into how they are perceived by others tend to exhibit higher levels of empathy and are more adept at understanding alternate perspectives and viewpoints.

Self-awareness is not a destination but a lifelong journey of self-discovery and growth. By committing to self-awareness practices, we can cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves and unleash our full potential. As we continue to explore our inner landscape with curiosity and compassion, we pave the way for greater fulfillment, authenticity, and well-being in our lives.

Practical tools to raise self-awareness:

Everyday Journaling Routine

By revealing your deepest fears, thoughts, and feelings to yourself through the art of journaling, you will gain instant clarity. Remind yourself that this is a healthy practice for your mind and body.

Coaching Exercises

Coaching tools, such as the wheel of life or core value exercises, offer a comprehensive perspective of an individual's life. These tools help identify key areas and highlight areas that need more attention and balance, providing a visual representation of one's life, needs, and aspirations.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a technique designed to cultivate non-judgmental awareness and accept experiences as they occur. It leads to positive changes in self-perception and attitudes towards others.

Grounding Techniques

One simple way to boost your awareness is by connecting your body directly to the earth's natural electric charge (electrons). Grounding, or earthing, is free, easy to do, improves overall awareness, and offers a wealth of other benefits.

  • Personality tests (Big Five, DISC, Myers-Briggs) can be a useful tool to gain insight into one's personality traits and behaviors. They identify patterns and lead to improved self-understanding. Honesty is key while taking the test, to avoid false outcomes. However, keep in mind that no personality test can ever fully capture the complexity of who you are.
